Mastering Area

The children in Year 5 have been approaching the subject of area in many different ways including with unifix.  They made an array to represent a multiplication for example 3 x 4 and noticed that this also represented the area of the rectangular shape..

We have been looking at a variation of pictorial representations of number bonds to 10 including the ten frame, part-whole model and the bar model. We are representing these using concrete objects as well as on whiteboards as mathematical  statements.

Why is a squared number called a squared number?

Today in maths we were exploring squared numbers.  We discovered that squared numbers make squares on the multiplication grid  for example 2 across and 2 down (2×2) made 4, 3 across and three down (3×3) made 9- all squares. 3D Shape Hunt!

This week we have been learning all about 3D shapes. Today Miss Jordan’s maths group went on a 3D shape hunt in the playground to see what we could find. We noticed lots of cylinders, cones, cuboids and even some triangular prisms!

IBM Robo Challenge Winners
