Sustainability at Heathbrook
“Wisdom begins in wonder” Socrates
Our Community Curriculum starts from where the children are at. Our children tell us that looking after and sharing their world is hugely important for them. As a result one of our three interconnecting curriculum themes is Sharing the Planet. This ensures that pupils are able to build upon existing knowledge and deepen their understanding as they develop into future-focused citizens.
We aim to provide a learning environment where children are amazed by the wonders of our world. All pupils are given regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on experience in these natural environments. They develop essential lifelong learning skills such as team building, intra and inter-personal skills as well as practical and intellectual skills. We also promote the benefits of healthy exercise in the fresh air and know that this also enables emotional wellbeing.
Heathbrook is known across London for its ‘exceptional’ outdoor learning environment [Ofsted], which includes a substantial Wildlife Garden. All age groups grow plants, vegetables, fruits and flowers both indoors and outdoors. Eating what they grow encourages healthy eating habits, whilst regular playground sales and our stall at Venn Street Market offers pupils an insight into financial sustainability and some basic business principles. Our strong partnership with the Green Schools Project supports children to understand the impact of our solar panels, LED lighting and air source heat pumps.
